We just landed in Beijing... I forgot to print out my hotel confirmation, so I pulled out my mini laptop and showed the name & address of the hotel in Chinese characters to the taxi driver so he could get us where we need to go.
There is a buzz in the air – you can feel it – EVERYONE here has Olympic fever. I caught it as soon as we landed, and I saw the massive staff wearing red & yellow (china colors) or light blue “Beijing 2008” outfits. Seeing the place to check in and get your tickets made me a little jealous... I HOPE we can get in and see some games. Opening Ceremonies? That would be a DREAM.
I feel like this city and country are on the “World Stage” right now, and wearing their “Sunday Best” to impress us all... especially those attending the Olympics. Immigration, Customs and the highway have an “Olympics only lane”. Obviously they want all of the athletes, their families, media and attendees to have the best experience possible.
We will be here in Beijing for 10 days – the longest time any one Asian city so far... and probably the longest ever besides Bali & Rishikesh, India - so I look forward to getting to know the city and the language. Granted, it will be NUTS with the Olympic crowd... but well have a chance to experience it from build-up to opening. I am guessing it will get more crazy and crowded each day we are here.
